Late antique period
The late antique family tomb is located on "Nezavisimost" Square, between the buildings of the Regional State Archives and the Court. It was discovered by Karel Shkorpil at the end of the 19th century. It was studied and photographed by archaeologist Milko Mirchev in the 1950s.
So far, no similar analogue has been found on the territory of Bulgaria. The tomb is unique with its plan layout and specifically with the eight-walled burial chamber covered with a dome. It is reached through a narrow staircase that leads to a vestibule covered with a vault. In the burial chamber, there are symmetrically placed arched niches on each wall, in which images of the ancestors of the interred are believed to have stood. This is proof that the tomb was family.
Currently, the tomb is in a bad, even emergency condition, as it was flooded during renovation works on the square in 2015. Only its entrance is visible, which stands locked and awaits better times for the tomb to be restored and socialized.
